26+ years of operational experience | 20+ years as IAATO Full Voting Members | 17 years on the IAATO Membership Committee and other working groups and commitees

At Consulting Antarctica | Spirit of Sydney Expeditions, we have dedicated our lives to Antarctica — not only as explorers but as architects of responsible operations.
For more than two decades, we have worked within the IAATO framework to ensure every vessel, company, and individual we advise upholds the highest possible standards in safety, environmental protection, and ethical travel.
As Full Voting Members of IAATO and active contributors to its Membership Committee, we are deeply involved in shaping the very guidelines that define how Antarctica is accessed and protected today.
Partnering with us means working alongside people who understand every line of the IAATO guidelines, every nuance of the permitting process, and every challenge of real-world polar operations.

The Foundation of Legal, Safe, and Sustainable Antarctic Operations
Operating in Antarctica requires more than enthusiasm — it requires authorization.
Every voyage, every landing, and every helicopter flight within the Antarctic Treaty area must be supported by an official Antarctic permit and a complete set of operational and environmental documentation.
As a Full Voting Member of IAATO for over 20 years, we know exactly how to make that happen.
What that means for you:
Credibility and Recognition:
IAATO Full Voting Members represent the most experienced and compliant operators in the world. Working with us signals to authorities and clients alike that your expedition meets international standards.
Regulatory Precision:
We know the Antarctic Treaty System inside out — from MARPOL and SOLAS to the Protocol on Environmental Protection and Polar Code requirements.
Streamlined Permitting:
We liaise directly with national competent authorities and IAATO committees, ensuring smooth approval processes and compliance at every level.
Reduced Risk:
IAATO Members follow strict codes for emergency preparedness, waste management, and wildlife interaction — protecting your guests, crew, and reputation.
Environmental Integrity:
Every expedition we design minimizes impact and maximizes positive contribution through science support, education, and conservation.
It is imperative to obtain an Antarctic permit to operate legally within the Treaty area. Consulting Antarctica’s experience ensures your voyage is not only compliant but exemplary — the benchmark of responsible Antarctic travel.

Our experts can join your vessel or expedition to observe and optimize your field practices in real time.
We identify inefficiencies, train your team, and refine procedures on-site to ensure your operation not only meets IAATO standards but stands out for its professionalism and safety.
The difference lies in our experience: we’ve been where you are going.

Rooted in IAATO Values — Focused on Your Success
OUR COMMITMENT
Our approach is built around IAATO’s four guiding principles — Environmental Protection, Safety, Education, and Collaboration — but at Consulting Antarctica, we add a fifth: Empowerment.
We don’t just ensure you meet standards; we make sure you and your team understand and own them.
That’s how sustainable operations are built — through knowledge transfer and shared commitment.
We believe that responsible Antarctic operations should also be inspiring, connecting guests, scientists, and operators with the profound importance of protecting this last great wilderness.
“Protecting Antarctica is not just a responsibility — it’s our craft.
Every operation we design contributes to preserving this pristine wilderness and the legacy of ethical exploration.”
Over Two Decades of Proven Polar Leadership
EXPERIENCE & CREDIBILITY
Our heritage is as deep as the Southern Ocean.
For over 26 years, we’ve been at the forefront of Antarctic expeditions — supporting scientific research, filming projects, and private sailing yacht and super yacht operations across the region, including the Ross Sea, Weddell Sea, Amundsen Sea, Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctic Peninsula, and all Sub-Antarctic islands.
Our founder and director, Darrel Day, as a master mariner has spent decades combining mountaineering expertise with field operations in some of the most remote and demanding locations on Earth.
Our long-standing membership within IAATO’s inner structure — including 17 years on the Membership Committee — positions us as both practitioners and policymakers in responsible Antarctic travel.
When you partner with Consulting Antarctica, you partner with a team that has helped define the very standards other operators follow.
