Darrel Day

DirectorPolar Expedition Leader & Ice Pilot

Darrel Day is one of the world’s most experienced yacht-based Antarctic expedition leaders — a polar specialist with over 250,000 nautical miles in southern waters and more than 25 years of field experience on the ice. Since his first voyage south in the austral summer of 1999–2000, he has returned almost every season, building a career defined by deep expertise, genuine exploration, and an enduring passion for one of the most extraordinary environments on Earth.

As Director of Consulting Antarctica | Spirit of Sydney Expeditions, Darrel designs and leads bespoke polar expeditions for expedition vessels, superyachts, scientists, filmmakers, and private clients. His voyages have reached the Antarctic Peninsula, the Ross Sea, the Subantarctic islands, and rarely visited destinations including the Balleny Islands, Peter I Island, and the Blood Falls of the McMurdo Dry Valleys. He has completed six half-circumnavigations of Antarctica and has supported more first ascents of Antarctic mountains from sailing yachts than any other operator in the world.

Darrel’s polar expertise is trusted across the expedition industry. He has provided consulting, logistics, and operational support to some of the world’s leading expedition and luxury travel companies, including Oceanwide Expeditions, Ponant, Intrepid Travel, Joro Experiences, Cookson’s Adventures, and Pelorus — bringing deep field knowledge and hard-won experience to every partnership.

Consulting Antarctica specialises in designing and delivering bespoke polar expeditions at the highest level of ambition and complexity. From heliskiing in remote Antarctic ranges to submersible dives beneath the ice, superyacht voyages into rarely navigated waters, and ski-mountaineering expeditions to peaks that have never felt a crampon — these are not off-the-shelf adventures. Every expedition is purpose-built, meticulously permitted, and led by a team with the field experience to operate safely and confidently in one of the world’s most demanding environments. Helicopter operations, advanced diving programs, kayaking, and expedition-grade mountaineering are all part of the toolkit — whether the goal is a first ascent, a record-setting voyage, or simply an extraordinary journey to a place very few humans will ever see.

His work has also supported landmark scientific research programs — including the largest privately funded marine mammals project ever undertaken in Antarctica — in collaboration with leading universities such as UC Santa Cruz, Duke, Stanford, Berkeley, and Miami. His media credits are equally wide-ranging, with expedition support for BBC’s Blue Planet 2 & 3, Disney Nature’s Penguins, National Geographic, HBO, Discovery Channel, and most recently Bertie Gregory’s Secrets of the Penguins for Disney+, which received three Emmy nominations and a BAFTA nomination in 2026.

A Full Voting Member of IAATO since 2007 and a Life Member of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Darrel brings rare institutional knowledge to every expedition he leads. Whether you’re planning a superyacht voyage, a scientific program, or a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the ends of the Earth, Darrel and his team offer the experience, credentials, and passion to make it extraordinary.
